Research Funding Strategy

The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund (JHMRF) is committed to laying the foundation for long-term mesothelioma research. We take pride in supporting the ‘building blocks’ that foster a growing, collaborative community of researchers dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for people affected by mesothelioma.

JHMRF funds research projects that aim to improve treatment and care, as well as to deepen understanding of the causes, development, and progression of mesothelioma. To date, we have awarded over £1.5 million to support high-quality research in this area.

We offer a range of funding opportunities, including:

  • Major project grants of up to £250,000

  • Pump-priming grants of up to £25,000 for pilot or feasibility studies

  • PhD and training fellowships to support early-career researchers

  • Travel and educational grants of up to £500 to support travel to conference

For current opportunities and eligibility criteria, please visit our Current Funding Opportunities page. All grants are awarded in accordance with our Research Grant Terms and Conditions.

JHMRF is a partner organisation of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), and eligible projects may be entitled to service support costs through the NIHR framework.

Awards

As a guide for future funding calls, we welcome applications from post-doctoral researchers, academics, and medically qualified professionals. Proposals may focus on laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, or applied health research related to mesothelioma. We are particularly interested in projects that aim to improve existing treatments, develop new therapeutic options, or enhance the delivery of care for mesothelioma patients.

Grants of up to £250,000 are available for projects lasting up to three years. Research must be conducted at a UK-based institution, although partner organisations in EU countries may participate as co-applicants, provided the project is led and coordinated by the UK host institution.

Please contact research@junehancockfund.org for further information and application forms.

PhD and Training Fellowships

These awards aim to strengthen research capacity in mesothelioma and support the development of individuals pursuing a career in this field. Proposals are invited for laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, or applied health research projects that focus on mesothelioma and demonstrate the potential to impact patient care or treatment. Applications for Doctoral and Masters studies are welcome, provided they include a strong research component and are supported by host institutions that can offer matched funding for the fellowship.

Please contact research@junehancockfund.org for further information and application forms.

Travel and Educational Grants

The JHMRF awards up to 10 travel grants each year. Applications are considered from researchers and health care professionals to support travel to conferences where applicants will either present papers or speak to a poster exhibit.

In certain circumstances, grants may also be awarded for educational purposes; for example, for a study visit to an academic centre of excellence or to attend a course. Applications for co-sponsorship with other organisations or institutions are welcome. Individuals may apply for up to a maximum of £500 in any one year period. These grants have been very well received and appreciated by successful applicants.
