Living with Mesothelioma
There are lots of small, positive steps you can take to help yourself feel as well as possible.
Taking care of your general health really makes a difference. Try to enjoy a balanced diet, ideally with foods that are high in calories and rich in protein to give your body the strength it needs.
If your appetite isn’t great, don’t worry – there are specially balanced nutritional drinks that can help. Your GP can prescribe them, or you can ask to speak to a hospital or community dietitian for more tailored advice.
Keeping active is also important for maintaining muscle tone. Even if you’re feeling tired, gentle movements like leg and ankle exercises while sitting can be really helpful.
If your energy is low or you get breathless easily, try to pace yourself and save your energy for the things you enjoy most. Make everyday tasks as simple and manageable as possible—and remember, it’s perfectly okay to accept help. Often, others are glad for the chance to support you.
Complementary therapies such as relaxation techniques, massage, or aromatherapy may help you feel more at ease and reduce stress or anxiety.
If you start to feel unwell, especially with a cold or chest infection, it’s best to get medical advice early. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of people with colds or the flu, just to be on the safe side.
Getting support
You’re not alone – support is available. Your GP and Consultant are there to help, and your local District Nursing Sister is a great first contact, ideally soon after diagnosis. She can offer support and help arrange any nursing care or equipment you might need.
Practical help at home like bathing aids or help with daily tasks such as washing, dressing, and cooking is available through your local Social Services. These services are means-tested, so it’s a good idea to check what benefits you’re entitled to, as they can help cover the costs.
There’s lot of help and support available via local charities and support groups. Take a look at our list of Support Groups to find your nearest group.
